In submerged arc welding production, the color shade of agglomerated flux serves as an intuitive indicator of product composition, manufacturing process and service performance. Determined by raw material proportioning, mineral constituents and sintering procedure, it can act as a simple reference for material selection and on site quality control within the industry.
Light colored agglomerated fluxes usually present light gray, off-white or pale yellow shades. They adopt medium to high basicity formulas with high purity raw materials and low impurity levels. Such fluxes deliver excellent deoxidation and desulfurization capacity, effectively avoiding weld defects such as porosity, cracks and slag inclusions. They ensure stable welding arcs, easy slag removal and good weld bead appearance, together with outstanding low temperature toughness and corrosion resistance. They are suitable for high end high precision welding applications including stainless steel, pressure vessels and precision steel structures.
Dark colored agglomerated fluxes are mainly dark gray and dark brown. Their formulas are rich in functional components such as manganese silicon oxides and iron based constituents. They feature favorable slag fluidity and spreadability with high welding fault tolerance. Well suited for high speed and multi wire high efficiency welding, they tolerate slight oxidation and rust on base metal and realize stable alloy transfer to guarantee weld strength, offering prominent cost performance. They are widely applied in mass production welding of carbon steel, low alloy steel, engineering machinery and other common scenarios.
It should be noted that no color is absolutely superior or inferior; they are merely intended for different application scenarios. Qualified commercial products show uniform color within each batch. Mottled discoloration is mostly caused by abnormal batching, defective sintering process or moisture induced contamination, which will directly impair welding quality. Proper selection based on color related characteristics can greatly improve welding efficiency and finished product quality.
